INTERNATIONAL NEWS

AT least 25 inmates have been shot dead by Syrian security forces during a riot in a jail for political prisoners in the mountains outside Damascus, a human rights group says.

"Islamist prisoners started a riot inside the prison this morning," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today, quoting a political prisoner in the jail contacted by mobile phone.

“Shooting is continuing against the prisoners,” the London-based group said, adding that a number of inmates had climbed the roof of the military prison in Saydnaya, north of Damascus, to escape the violence.

It said the number of dead was now 25.

The group said it had received phone calls from relatives of prisoners asking Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to intervene to stop the clashes in Saydnaya, an ancient town with biblical connections.

There was no immediate comment from the Syrian authorities.

BASHINGS BEHIND BARS

July 12, 2008

Prison guards have allegedly been targeted in violent assaults at the Maryborough Correctional Centre in the past few weeks. The shocking reports have surfaced following convicted murderer Scott Maygar being charged on Monday with attempted murder.

One prison guard was punched in the face and beaten so badly by a number of prisoners last Friday night that he was rushed to hospital with serious facial injuries, a Corrective Services spokesperson has confirmed.

While the prisoner was being escorted away from the injured guard, a different staff member was assaulted and received minor injuries.

The spokesperson said another major assault last Saturday about 4.30pm had also resulted in a prisoner being rushed to hospital with fractures to his ankle and a wound requiring stitches.
